New Norfolk runners-up in junior premiership

Running on to Kingston Oval

IN a hard-fought contest from start to finish, New Norfolk lost to Brighton by 20 points in the STJFL Under 14B grand final at Kingston yesterday. The first quarter saw both teams go hard at the ball with neither side giving an inch. Brighton kicked the first two majors but the Eagles hit back with two goals of their own and by the first change led by two points.

In the second quarter Brighton kicked away with a further three goals to New Norfolk’s three behinds and the Robins’ accuracy saw them lead by 13 points at the main break.

After regrouping in the change rooms the young Eagles needed a special effort to stay in the game. They responded by kicking two goals and four behinds to Brightons solitary point. The Eagles led by two points at three-quarter-time.

The game was now in the balance and the first five minutes of the final term saw the teams go head to head but it was Brighton who kicked away with four goals and one behind to New Norfolk’s three majors and the Eagles went down fighting.

The young Eagles gave their all for the entire game and must be congratulated for their efforts. Considering Especially that we had only five players at the start of the season, making it to the grand final has been quite an achievement. Hold your heads high team – you all have a lot to be proud of.

Coach Josh Clifford should also hold his head high. His role in not only guiding the team to the grand final, but also as a role model to these young kids, has been terrific. The bond he has with them all holds things in great stead for next season. Well done and thank you Josh.

Hayden Bielleman

At the presentations after the game, Hayden Bielleman was presented with the best-on-ground medal. His running goal in the third quarter when the team needed a lift was great to watch. Congratulations cobber, you thoroughly deserved this award.

Thanks to all those who made the trip to Kingston to support the young Eagles, it really was much appreciated. New Norfolk has a great following, thank you. After the game an after-party was held at the Tomkinson’s house. Thanks Graham and Annette for such a great time – it was just what we all needed.
