Great results for young cricketer

IT’S one thing to be selected for a cricket representative team, but to actually win the Intrastate Cup is another. And that’s what the Derwent Valley’s Joshua Farrow did while playing with the Southern Storm Under 13 team.

After being selected in November last year, Josh travelled to Ulverstone where he and the team played four matches over four days. Like the current Australian team, the Southern Storm completed a 4-0 whitewash to win the cup in what was a great team effort by all involved.

Although quietly spoken, you could hear the excitement in the young cricket star’s voice.”Yeah it was great, we really played well, winning the cup was excellent,” he said from the family home at Ouse. Josh’s mum Natasha couldn’t speak highly enough of the boys: “It was a terrific effort, they really played well as a team and they learnt a lot not only over the last four days, but since the trials began last year.”

Josh’s contribution to the team’s success was excellent. In the first match he took 1 for 11 off five overs (one maiden) and he also took one catch. In the second match he captured 1 for 20 off four overs; in the third match he took 1 for 8 off two overs; and in the fourth match he took 1 for 14 off six overs.

As an indication of how well the team played, Josh only got to bat once as he was one of the last to come in. Off the 17 overs that Josh bowled throughout the four matches, he bowled only two no-balls and two wides – a fine effort all round.

Although very happy with making the team and then going on to win every match, Josh said he would like to thank the Gretna Cricket Club for not only giving him the chance to play cricket, but also for the kind donation in assisting him with expenses during his time in Ulverstone.

Josh would also like to thank long-time family friends John and Libby Shoobridge, of Claremont, for having him stay at their house and taking him to the training in the lead up to the intrastate cup matches. To his coaches David Sheppard and Oliver Robinson, thank you for your time and effort. And one other very big thank you: Josh would like to thank his parents Natasha and Craig Farrow for all the time and effort they have put in to make it all possible.

On behalf of all involved at the Gretna Cricket Club, well done Joshua Farrow, you have certainly shown terrific dedication and you sure have a bright future ahead of yourself, well done. And there is no rest for Josh – besides playing with the Gretna Under 13s, Josh was also chosen to represent the Derwent Valley, selected from the Gretna, Molesworth and New Norfolk Under 13s teams.

Results of the Intrastate Cup matches: Southern Storm 8 for 163 off 40 overs defeated Northern Force 9 for 121 off 40 overs; Southern Storm 3 for 84 off 16 overs defeated North West Lighting 6 for 80 off 20 overs; Southern Storm 5 for 108 off 20 overs defeated Northern Force 5 for 107 off 20 overs; Southern Storm 7 for 160 off 40 overs defeated North West Lighting 8 for 148 off 40 overs.
