Community grants awarded

JUST over $8500 has been allocated to local organisations in the first round of the Derwent Valley Council’s community small grants program for 2017/18. Reporting to last month’s council meeting, customer service officer Louise Rider said the program was designed to help local groups serving the community in the Derwent Valley.

“It is directed at not-for-profit groups whose aims are consistent with council’s Strategic Plan and who can demonstrate a benefit to the community in undertaking a project identified in their application,” Mrs Rider said in a report. “A sub-committee consisting of deputy mayor Shaw and Councillors Belcher, Lathey and Triffett have considered the applications in consultation with council staff.”

Mrs Rider said more than $220,000 had been distributed since the current community grants program started in the 1997/98 financial year. This year’s grants totaling $8568 went to:

Derwent Valley Men’s Shed Inc (purchase of oxy/acetylene cylinders) $948
IOOF Lodges South (hire of social rooms and insurance) $2770
Derwent Valley Autumn Festival (purchase of two 3m gazebos) $400
New Norfolk Historical Information Centre (30th anniversary exhibition for Heritage Month) $1000
Friends of Frascati (restore historic hornbeam tree) $400
Molesworth Community Hall Inc (external painting) $750
Illoura Animal Refuge (reduce stray cat populations in New Norfolk) $3000
