A FUNERAL will be held this Friday to farewell former Derwent Valley deputy mayor Barry Lathey who has died this week in his 85th year.

Mr Lathey, who served as a Derwent Valley councillor for 19 years, also had a long connection with the New Norfolk Fire Brigade, including 12 years as brigade chief.

An electrician by trade, he was a National Serviceman in his youth and in later years had a long career as an attendant to senior judges at the Supreme Court of Tasmania.

Among his many accolades, he was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal in 1995 and he had been the Derwent Valley’s citizen of the year in 1994.

Barry is survived by Madge, his wife of 63 years, and their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their young great-great-granddaughter. His funeral service will be held at Graham Family Funerals, New Town, at 10am this Friday, followed by the burial at White Beach Cemetery, Nubeena, around 2pm.
