GRETNA I went down to Sorell by eight wickets in the Southern Cricket Association second grade grand final at Gretna on Saturday. In a reduced match of 48 overs each due to the ground being damp from the morning dew, Gretna won the toss and chose to bat, hitting up the good score of 8/195.

Openers Craig Cunningham (55 from 92 deliveries) and Ben Rainbird (50 from 81) batted well together and got the team of to a great start with a 99-run partnership. Next best were Mathew Burns who made 20, Zac Crosswell 12, Rhys Browning 11 and Peter Jelkic 10 not out.

Sorell dominated with the bat in reply, losing just two wickets in the run chase finishing 2/197 off 34 overs. Wicket-takers for Gretna were Craig Cunningham 1-28 (7) and Ben Rainbird 1-14 (2). All 11 players bowled for Gretna, but unfortunately had no answers for the Sorell batting attack.

During the day, umpire Geoff Jackson – a Sorell councillor – threw down the challenge to Derwent Valley mayor Ben Shaw to each donate $100 to the winning team, and Ben obliged, having strong ties to the club. Sorell captain Scott Johnson received the donations during the presentations and then kindly donated $100 back to Gretna. A nice gesture indeed.

It was a big weekend for the Sorell Cricket Club, with all three of its teams winning their respective grand finals. It’s a big achievement to have all three teams make the grand finals, but to win all three is quite an effort. Well done Sorell.
