People at the New Norfolk Market

Back to the market place

TWO well-known Derwent Valley markets are back in business after several months in recess due to the coronavirus pandemic. The outdoor New Norfolk Market in High St resumes tomorrow (Saturday) from 8am-2pm, and the indoor Bushy Park Market reopens on Monday from 11am-2pm.

The operators of both markets have asked customers to be mindful of the ongoing physical distancing requirements of the state’s response to COVID-19, which includes limits on the number of people allowed to gather in one place.

The latest easing of business restrictions on June 26 allowed markets to open, as well as food vans operating at markets. The board of the Derwent Valley Community House will discuss its own monthly market at its next meeting.

“Whilst we are all excited for the return of the friendliest market in Tasmania, things will still be a little different for a while and we need your help to ensure everyone is aware of your obligations in helping us stay COVIDSafe as determined by government regulations,” New Norfolk Market operator Jessica Cosgrove said in a Facebook post. “Every stallholder has their own Covid Safety Plan and there is an overarching one for the whole of the Banjo’s New Norfolk Market operations,” she said.

Ms Cosgrove said she would be grateful for customers’ support with the following:
🔹 Being aware that the market is still capped on numbers. Shopping and browsing is welcome, but do not gather in groups or stand around
🔷 Those buying food to take away are encouraged to eat it at home or in one of the parks outside of the market space
🔷 Complying with 1.5m physical distancing requirements wherever possible
🔷 Using hand sanitiser stations
🔷 Staying home if unwell
🔷 Staying kind and supporting market management and stallholders with any coronavirus-related measures

“We are all adapting to significant change, and it is still very much a challenging and unprecedented time; let’s do the right thing and support each other,” Ms Cosgrove said.

The New Norfolk Market operates in High St between Burnett and Stephen streets, New Norfolk, each Saturday from 8am-2pm. From July 6 the Bushy Park Market will operate inside the Upper Derwent United Hall at Gordon River Rd, Bushy Park, from 11am-2pm on weekdays and 11am-3pm on weekends and public holidays.

  1. “Staying kind and supportive of market management” ???

Staying kind and supportive of the health of the community should be a priority.

Has every hard surface in High St been Covid standard cleaned so we in the community can support our local businesses after the market.???
