Barry McDougall with Lions Club Christmas cakes

Lions Club Christmas cakes available now

CHRISTMAS might be different this year due to the coronavirus pandemic but some things will be the same, including the traditional Lions Club Christmas cakes and puddings as usual which are available now from the New Norfolk Guardian and Amcal pharmacies as well as at the Derwent Valley Council.

The 1.5kg Christmas cake costs $17, the 1kg Christmas cake is $13 and the 900g Christmas pudding is $13. They can also be purchased by calling Greg Hudson on 0418 127 439.

“The Lions Christmas cake and pudding program has been a major fundraising project of Lions Australia since 1965,” local Lions Club president Kerry Kievit said. “For 55 years, our cakes and puddings have been baked by Australia’s leading food companies.”

Previous manufacturers have included Big Sister, Gartrell White, Arnotts and Sarah Lee. Since 1983 they have been made by Top Taste, the baking division of George Weston Foods Limited.

“All cakes and puddings are baked to our special recipes ensuring uniform, high quality products,” Mrs Kievit said. “Rest assured that if you buy one of our delicious cakes or puddings, the proceeds will be put to good use,” she said.

In recent years annual sales across Australia have raised approximately $2 million to contribute to health, welfare and humanitarian projects run by districts and clubs.

“Locally, funds raised from sales are used for our many New Norfolk Lions Club projects and on state and national causes. These include Give Me 5 for Kids, Clown Doctors Tasmania, St John Ambulance, Diabetes Tasmania, Lions medical research, Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation, Lions Eye Health Program and Lions Hearing Dogs and disaster relief.”
