AFTER a long day at Boyer Oval the week before, when four games were played, it was a much shorter day last Saturday with just the women’s game to keep the New Norfolk District Football Club volunteers occupied. A good crowd turned out in cold but fine conditions, to see if the women’s team could return to the winners’ list against St Virgil’s who were looking for their first win of the season.
From the first bounce, it was obvious that St Virgil’s had come to play. New Norfolk was under pressure from the first bounce, but the backline led by Sophie Farrow was defending stoutly. The margin at quarter time was 14 points.
The second quarter was much the same as the first, with the home side struggling to get the ball into their forward line. Once again, the Eagle backline was working hard to hold the visitors. The half-time scores were St Virgil’s 4.4 to New Norfolk 0.0.
St Virgil’s really applied the pressure in the third quarter, but inaccurate kicking for goal resulted in them scoring goals and six behinds. The visitors held a massive 52-point lead at three quarter time. The final quarter saw the home team finally getting the ball consistently into their forward line. Unfortunately, they were unable to score, but kept the visitors to a respectable 1.3 for the term.
Overall, it was a disappointing day for the New Norfolk Eagles. However, St Virgil’s fielded it’s strongest team of the season, with former Hobart players making a significant contribution. Training this week will concentrate on
tackling drills, with a stronger performance expected this weekend.
