Three people promoting Christmas Day lunch

Free Christmas lunch and festivities on the Square tomorrow

FOR the second year in a row, Arthur Square in central New Norfolk will be the venue for a free Christmas Day lunch tomorrow. Anyone without plans for Christmas Day lunch is welcome to join in the picnic-style community feast.

A local tradition for about three decades, this free Christmas Day lunch moved outdoors for the first time last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Provided by the churches of New Norfolk and community volunteers, the lunch has previously been held in the St Matthew’s Church Hall and the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall.

More than 100 meals were served at last year’s outdoor event and despite the change from a sit-down lunch to a picnic, the basic idea remains the same: bring a friend, or come alone and make a friend. The lunch is free and open to all from 11am-3pm on Christmas Day tomorrow.

The cooking will once again be done by Justin Logie of Black Mountain Gourmet Bakery, ably assisted by several volunteers. Spokeswoman Gillian Parton said great support had been received from the Derwent Valley Council, along with the local Lions and Rotary Clubs and other helpers.

Limited seating will be provided but Mrs Parton said anyone who could bring their own chair or picnic rug would make it easier for those not able to carry chairs or get up off the ground. “There will be drinks and great food, but no self-serve, so please respect the directions of the volunteers. Food will be served on paper plates or in take away containers,” she said.

Entry to the lunch will be at the corner of Pioneer Ave and Bathurst St, through the Arthur Square archway. Under the COVID-Safe plan, those attending will need to check-in. Family activities will start at 11am and food service will start at noon. There will be musical entertainment after lunch. If the weather is bad and you find the Square empty, head to the alternative venue at the War Memorial Hall in Circle St.

Anyone wishing to financially support this community-based initiative can donate to the New Norfolk Christian Leaders Association via BSB 067404, Account 2800 0822, referring to the Christmas Lunch. For more information call Gillian on 0429 611 528.
