DISABILITY support worker James Graham has been elected to replace Martyn Evans as a councillor on the Derwent Valley Council. Mr Graham, of Magra, previously served as a councillor from 2009-2018.
Mr Evans’ seat on the council was declared vacant after he missed three monthly meetings in a row. Mr Graham was elected today in a recount of the votes that elected Mr Evans in 2018. Mr Graham will serve out the remainder of Mr Evans’ term, until next year’s council elections.
Mr Graham has remained a keen observer of the council and public gallery participant since losing his seat at the 2018 election.
A further recount will be conducted next Monday to determine who will fill the vacancy caused by Paul Belcher’s resignation from council last week. No announcement has been made about the process to fill former mayor Ben Shaw’s seat and elect a new mayor following his resignation on Saturday morning.

Congratulations James.
Keep them on their toes.
Congratulations James
Doesn’t a mayor leaving force a byelection?
Why not just have a new election for the lot?
Yes it will be held in early February.
Well done Migloo.
Fantastic news! Congratulations James.
Great stuff James – voice for the people
Having never been to or listened to council meetings until recognising the chaos at DVC in 2019, I have learnt so much about how to behave as a respectful, educated participant at council meetings that James Graham has shown.
As someone with an invisible disability I really look forward what James will bring to DVC.
Thank you Mr James T Graham.
