Former mayor joins race for council seat

THE Tasmanian Electoral Commission has today announced the names of candidates contesting the Derwent Valley Council by-elections. These will be conducted by postal voting and the municipality’s 8159 electors will start to receive their ballot packs in a week’s time, with a further three weeks to consider their vote and return their ballot.

The two by-elections are to find a new councillor and mayor following Ben Shaw’s resignation last month. A late starter among the candidates is former mayor Tony Nicholson, of Lachlan, who joins five other candidates seeking election as mayor.

The candidates are listed below in the order provided by the electoral commission:

Councillor – four candidates (one to be elected)
BINGLEY, Phillip, of Lachlan
BINNY, Peter, of Granton
DRACOULIS, Michelle, of New Norfolk
NICHOLSON, Tony, of Lachlan

Mayor – six candidates
BINGLEY, Phillip, of Lachlan
BINNY, Peter, of Granton
COSGROVE, Jessica, of New Norfolk
DRACOULIS, Michelle, of New Norfolk
NICHOLSON, Tony, of Lachlan
TRIFFETT, Julie, of New Norfolk
