Labor pitches $5m sports deal for the Derwent Valley

A LABOR government would provide a $5m sports package for the Derwent Valley if elected to office in next month’s federal election, Lyons MHR Brian Mitchell said today (Friday). Mr Mitchell, who is defending his seat against seven challengers, said the funding had no strings attached.

He said the funding did not require a matching contribution from the Derwent Valley Council but any funding the council could provide would help the money to go further in delivering upgrades to Boyer Oval and Tynwald Park as part of the council’s sporting master plan.

“Taken together, these projects will deliver communities across the region the facilities they deserve,” Mr Mitchell said. “Only an Albanese Labor Government will deliver our community the funding we deserve. “Labor’s New Norfolk Sports Package isn’t just about helping local clubs and encouraging participation in sports – it’s about building local communities,” Mr Mitchell said.

“The Derwent Valley is one of Tasmania’s fastest growing areas and requires public amenities to match, but projects such as Boyer Oval have been forgotten by the Liberal government and only attended to in the shadows of an election. Labor’s $5 million investment looks beyond May 21. The New Norfolk Sports Package will rejuvenate these important community assets, boost sporting participation across Australian Rules, soccer, and cricket, and ultimately deliver long-term health and community benefits for the Derwent Valley.”

Federal Liberal candidate Susie Bower recently announced that a re-elected Coalition government would provide $1m for works at Boyer Oval.
