Bower bows out as Bell Bay beckons

WITH about 1300 votes still to be counted in Lyons, Liberal Party candidate Susie Bower today gave a concession speech via social media and congratulated Labor’s Brian Mitchell on being returned as the Federal Member for Lyons.

Of the 72,494 votes counted so far, Ms Bower was the most popular candidate for Lyons in the May 21 federal election, netting 37.32% of the vote, with Mr Mitchell on 28.99%. But after the distribution of the other six candidates’ preferences, it was Mr Mitchell who came out on top with 50.65% of the vote.

On Friday it was announced that Ms Bower had been reappointed to her previous position as chief executive of the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone.

“Well, the race has been run and won, and I would like to congratulate Brian on retaining the seat,” Ms Bower said in her video today. “Of course, we don’t do any of this without a whole team of volunteers and I’d really like to thank my campaign team and every volunteer that put so many hours into this campaign.

“I’d also like to thank our party members for giving me this opportunity. I loved every single minute of it. A big thank you as well to my core campaign team of Jordan Gunton, Jackie Martin, Helen Davis and Steph Cameron. I am forever indebted to all of you. And lastly, a big thank you to the people of Lyons. I loved meeting every single one of you, and thank you so much for sharing your stories with me.

“So what’s next for me? Well, I’ve been reinstated as the CEO of the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone, so it’s back to work. But at the end of the day, I only ever wanted what was best for the people of Lyons. So thank you. And I’ll see you around.”
