Women’s Report by Chris Lovell
THE lady Eagles were on the road to Pembroke Park last Sunday to try to get back on the winners list following their first defeat of the season the previous week against the Brighton Robins. The women’s match against South East Suns was the only Eagles game for the weekend, with the men’s sides having a competition bye.
The Eagles welcomed back some key players in Chloe Ford, Sophie Farrow and Laura Wigg from injury and illness to strengthen the side heading towards finals. The game was played in fine conditions, although the ground was heavy underfoot with a significant amount of water laying on one side. This created congested football on the better side of the ground which did not suit the Eagles’ open, running style of play. The first quarter saw the lady Eagles score 3 goals while holding the Suns goalless to hold an 18-point lead at the first change: New Norfolk 3.1 (19) to the Suns 0.1 (1).
The second quarter was all the Eagles as they dominated play and attacked relentlessly. Unfortunately, they were very inaccurate in front of goal, scoring two goals and nine behinds while holding the Suns scoreless. They held a commanding 39-point lead at the half-time break: New Norfolk 5.0 (40) to the Suns 0.1 (1).
The third quarter saw the Suns get on top of the Eagles, scoring two goals and two behinds. The Eagles seemed flat as they only scored two behinds for the quarter to hold a 27-point lead at three-quarter-time: New Norfolk 5.12 (42) to the Suns 2.3 (15).
Following some stern words from coach Dean King at three quarter time, the Eagles came out full of running in the last term to completely overrun the Suns. The Eagles were unstoppable, scoring seven goals and five behinds while holding the Suns scoreless. The Eagles took some time to get their game flowing on Sunday but eventually ran out comfortable winners by 74 points. They remain on top of the SFLW Division 3 ladder and look forward to getting back to full strength in the coming weeks as they build towards finals.
