Arrests follow Bridgewater Bridge drama

POLICE have arrested two young men following a traffic incident that spanned both sides of the River Derwent at Granton and Bridgewater earlier today (Friday).

“Around 12.45pm … a Toyota Corolla was stolen from Hopkins St, Moonah. The vehicle was seen by police a short time later, travelling on the Brooker Hwy,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

“The vehicle was successfully ‘spiked’ by police near Rusts Rd in Granton. It continued northbound and went across the Bridgewater Bridge where it collided with an oncoming vehicle. A third vehicle was also involved in the crash.

“The two youths in the offending vehicle were apprehended by police. The drivers and passengers of the two other vehicles did not sustain significant injuries. Inquiries are ongoing.”

As part of the investigation, police would like to speak to anyone who saw the Corolla, including any dash-cam footage, by calling 131 444. Information can also be provided anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperstas.com.au
