Candidate statement: Deb Carnes

WITH about a week until the postal ballots start arriving for this year’s local government elections, Derwent Valley Council candidate Deb Carnes is the latest to provide a statement for publication by New Norfolk and Derwent Valley News.

“Fifteen years ago I moved to the Derwent Valley and feel fortunate to have been here during the COViD-19 lockdown as my daily walk on the Esplanade helped keep me sane. With an extensive background in community and volunteer roles I’m well-equipped to take on the role of Councillor if elected. And as a sail trainee on Young Endeavour I spent time at the helm during a Beaufort scale wind-force 11 storm – so I can clearly steer a ship through rough seas!

“As a former member of the Rural Youth Organisation of Tasmania I gained governance experience taking on roles at club, region and state level, also representing the organisation to other bodies, and spending three months on an exchange to Sweden. For two years I held the role of Safety Director for the Agfest Organising Committee leading the implementation of a site safety checklist assisting to maintain insurance premiums. This shows my ability to work within a team, including development and implementation of strategic planning and associated budgets.

“With a strong background in health and education I understand the importance of health and wellbeing at the local level and the importance of access to services. My experience working with artificial intelligence, strong connections to the Tasmanian start-up community alongside my understanding of the agriculture and resource industries means I’m placed to navigate the challenges of technology, disruption and future transformation for rural/regional economies. Currently my volunteer work includes being Chair of the Rural Nursing and Midwifery Faculty (Australian College of Nursing) and membership of WHO Global Patient Safety Network.”
