Queen’s death: council flags flying low

FOLLOWING the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland overnight, the Derwent Valley Council has this morning lowered its flags to half-mast. Council compliance officer Ken Lyall performed the flag-lowering just before 9am today.

Mr Lyall (pictured) said the flags would be flown at half-mast, in accordance with protocol, until the late Queen’s funeral. As the council’s flags are not illuminated, they will be taken down each night.

Buckingham Palace issued the following statement earlier today (last evening in the UK): “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
