Electoral Commission predicts three new Derwent Valley councillors

EARLY figures from the counting of votes in the Derwent Valley Council election suggest there will be at least three new councillors. With 20% of the votes counted as of 6.22pm, Michelle Dracoulis looks to be confirmed as mayor and councillor with a strong personal vote.

Luke Browning is also likely to be returned as a councillor, sitting in second place with 168 votes. Unsuccessful mayoral candidate Peter Binny is in third place with 121 votes and likely to be elected as a councillor, followed by current deputy mayor Jessica Cosgrove with 111 votes and Justin Derksen with 104.

There are 18 candidates contesting the eight seats on the council and at the half-way mark, the first preference votes look like this:

  2. BROWNING, Luke 168, 11.59%, 1.04
  3. BINNY, Peter 121, 8.35%, 0.75
  4. COSGROVE, Jessica 111, 7.66%, 0.69
  5. DERKSEN, Justin 104, 7.18%, 0.64
  6. BINGLEY, Phillip 99, 6.83%, 0.61
  7. GRAHAM, James 87, 6.00%, 0.54
  8. HILL, Matt 82, 5.66%, 0.51
  9. LOWE, Sara 71, 4.90%, 0.44
  10. BIGG, Phillip 60, 4.14%, 0.37
  11. SHOOBRIDGE, Wayne 54, 3.73%, 0.33
  12. CHAPLIN, Heather 44, 3.04%, 0.27
  13. WIGGINS, Brody 37, 2.55%, 0.23
  14. WOODS, Natasha 37, 2.55%, 0.23
  15. VIRTUE, Liz 28, 1.93%, 0.17
  16. CARNES, Deb 22, 1.52%, 0.14
  17. MARYNIAK, Brett 16, 1.10%, 0.10
  18. NELSON, Eve 9, 0.62%, 0.06

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission predicts that the new council will be as follows: Michelle Dracoulis, Luke Browning, Jessica Cosgrove, Sara Lowe, Peter Binny, Matt Hill, Justin Derksen and Phillip Bingley. Mr Binny, Ms Lowe and Mr Derksen would be new to the council.
