New Norfolk man charged over Christmas morning fires

POLICE at Glenorchy are investigating two incidents during the early hours of Christmas Day in which Molotov cocktails were allegedly thrown at parked vehicles in Berriedale.

Shortly before 2am today (December 25), police were called to Maroni Rd where they identified three vehicles which appeared to have been damaged. Around 4.30am, officers responded to reports of another vehicle having been targeted in a separate but related incident in the same street.

Police say no-one was injured during the incidents and the resulting fires had been rapidly extinguished by witnesses, with the vehicles sustaining only minor damage.

As a result of investigations, a 58 year old New Norfolk man was arrested and charged with unlawfully setting fire to property. The man has been detained in custody and will appear before an out of hours sitting in the Hobart Magistrates Court on December 26.

Residents in the surrounding areas have been asked to review any available CCTV footage around the time of the incidents. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident can contact Glenorchy CIB on 131 444 or information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
