Minister bags a tagged trout at Shannon Lagoon

WITH a lot of attention this year on the $2000 tagged trout released around Tasmania, government minister and Lyons MHA Guy Barnett was pleasantly surprised to catch a tagged trout in Shannon Lagoon over the Christmas break.

However, instead of being worth some cash, State Development minister Barnett was pleasantly surprised to know the tagged trout was part of an Inland Fisheries Service study into the performance of trout in Shannon Lagoon, where the water is often quite cloudy.

Minister Barnett contacted the IFS and gave them the number on the tag – 2360. The IFS reported that the trout was one of 503 tagged trout transferred from Lake King William in June 2017 and it was 310mm and 390 grams when released.

So nearly five years later, tagged brown trout #2360 weighed in at 2kg and 51cm long – and for the record, it was caught on a black spinner fly near where the outflow from Great Lake enters the lagoon.
