THE recently-crowned Derwent Valley Council Australia Day Young Sportsperson of the Year is continuing to achieve in his chosen sports. March 4 saw Tyler Benson make his debut for the Glenorchy Cricket Club’s Premier League men’s 1st Grade team.
This is a big achievement for a young man aged 17 years and one day. Tyler was presented with his Glenorchy 1st XI playing number (430) and cap before the game, which was a two-day game completed on March 11.
Tyler batted in both innings and faced some seriously fast bowling in the from the Hobart Hurricanes, Australian and Tasmanian player Riley Meredith, as well as facing left arm fast Melbourne Stars, Tasmanian bowler/all-rounder Sam Rainbird.
Tyler snatched a catch when fielding, but unfortunately the Glenorchy team lost to Clarence in this game. With this selection Tyler has now played at the highest level for both of the cricket clubs he has played for, after previously debuting for the New Norfolk Redcaps men’s 1st Grade team at the age of 14.
Congratulations Tyler.
