Gallery: Anzac Day parade and civic service

GOOD attendances were reported at all of the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands Anzac Day observances last week. More than 200 assembled at the New Norfolk Cenotaph for the Dawn Service, with a similar number at Gretna and about 70 at the Fentonbury War Memorial. Dawn Services were also held at Maydena and Arthurs Lake.

At New Norfolk, parade marshal Dale Britten marched about 60 veterans and family members from the RSL Club to the Cenotaph via Tank St. At 10.30am, Mr Britten again had charge of the main parade, which marched from Arthur Square and up High St to the Cenotaph.

Onlookers speculated that the audience for the 11am civic service may have been slightly smaller than the Dawn Service gathering. Former serviceman Ivan Davis gave the Anzac Day address, which reflected on his own service and the effect on his life, leading him to encourage all those present to look after one another, talk to their mates and seek help when required. Rodney Bester was master of ceremonies.

Bugler John O’Carroll sounded the Last Post at the New Norfolk Dawn Service and 11am service and his Derwent Valley Concert Band colleagues marched and performed at the latter service. Elsewhere in the region, 11am services were held at Bushy Park, Hamilton, Bothwell and Miena.
