Issued at 11:22am on Wednesday 31 May 2023

By the Bureau of Meteorology, Hobart.

Flood Watch Number: 2

Minor flooding is possible along the Lower Derwent and North Esk Rivers overnight Wednesday.

A westerly airstream is forecast to bring showers to western Tasmania during Wednesday. The passage of a cold front on Wednesday evening is likely to result in showers in the north increasing later Wednesday into Thursday.

Catchments in the west and northeast are moderately wet following rainfall over recent weeks.

Rainfall totals of around 20-45 mm were observed in the 24 hours to 9:00 am Wednesday over western parts of the Derwent catchment, with lighter rainfall of less than 5 mm observed in the North Esk catchment.

Widespread rainfall totals of up to 30 mm are possible for the Lower Derwent and North Esk River catchments for the remainder of Wednesday, with further rainfall of 5-10 mm on Thursday.

Forecast rainfall may result in river level rises later on Wednesday, with minor flooding possible from overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

North Esk River

Derwent River (Lower Derwent and Styx Rivers)

Flood Warning is now current for the Huon River.
