Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in South East, East Coast and parts of Western, Upper Derwent Valley, North East and Midlands Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:38 pm Thursday, 13 July 2023: Damaging winds developing overnight in the south and east.

Weather Situation: A vigorous cold front is currently approaching Tasmania. Strong to damaging winds ahead of the front are expected to reach the southwest of the state this evening, before spreading to southern and eastern parts of the state overnight. Winds are then expected to ease during Friday morning behind the front as it clears away to the east.

Strong winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 100 km/h are likely through southwestern parts of the state from this evening. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS will then extend through southern and eastern districts from midnight tonight. Wind gusts in the South East and East Coast districts may possibly reach up to 110 km/h.

Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds in the south during Friday morning, and in the northeast by early Friday afternoon.

Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11pm Thursday.
