No swimming at Bushy Park this summer

FREE transport from Bushy Park to the New Norfolk Swimming Pool will be offered on five occasions this summer. The free bus is intended to compensate for the Derwent Valley Council’s decision not to open the Bushy Park Pool this season.

In a statement, mayor Michelle Dracoulis said the Department of State Growth planned to replace the bridge on Gordon River Rd next to the Bushy Park War Memorial Swimming Pool in the coming months. “A bypass will be built next to the existing bridge to allow for traffic movement during [the] works. As a result, council resolved earlier this year not to open the Bushy Park pool this season due to [its] proximity to [the] works,” Cr Dracoulis said.

“To maintain community access to a pool, Derwent Valley Council is providing a shuttle service from Bushy Park Market to the New Norfolk Pool. By providing a free bus service, council can help make it easier on families and community who use the pool to escape the heat and enjoy their summer,” Cr Dracoulis said.

The free bus service will run on five Sundays between December and February, leaving the Upper Derwent United Hall (Bushy Park Market) at 489 Gordon River Rd, on December 3 and 17, January 14 and 21, and February 4. No bookings will be needed and there will be no stops between Bushy Park and the New Norfolk Pool. The bus will depart Bushy Park and 10.30am. The return trip to Bushy Park will be at 4pm.

“The bus service will be free, however patrons will still need to purchase pool entry upon arrival,” Cr Dracoulis said. “The timetable will be advertised on the New Norfolk Swimming Pool and council’s Facebook pages, along with local noticeboards throughout the Derwent Valley.”
