New Norfolk into T20 grand final

TWO Derwent Valley teams took part in Southern Cricket Association T20 semi-finals on Wednesday of this week, with one of them advancing to the grand final and the other bowing out.

3rd Grade 20/20 format: New Norfolk 1/80 (7.2 overs) defeated Bagdad 8/76 (20 overs). In the first semi-final, the Redcaps 2 team hosted Bagdad at Tynwald on Wednesday night. This final was a sudden-death win and advance to the grand final, or lose and it’s the end of the road for the T20 roster. Batting first, Bagdad found scoring hard to do against a switched-on Redcaps fielding and bowling team. The Redcaps used six bowlers and all had the pleasure of picking up a wicket with Aaron Drew and Jye Nichols picking up two each. Bagdad saw out its full 20 overs but only managed to post 76 on the scoreboard. With the recent form of Stewart Rice with the bat, it wasn’t long before the Redcaps took the win and progressed to the grand final. Openers Rice (58 from 25 balls including five 6s and five 4s) and Jake King (21 from 17) combined to score all the required runs for a draw with Rice being dismissed with the home side sitting on 76 as well. King finished-off the game with a four after Will Banks joined him at the crease. The Redcaps will wait for the results of tonight’s (Thursday) semi-final to see who they are playing and where the grand final will be held. Batting: S. Rice 58 from 25, J. King 21 from 17. Bowling: A. Drew 2 for 12 from 4, J. Nichols 2 for 14 from 4.

6th Grade 20/20 format: Molesworth 10/77 (17.4 overs) was defeated by St Ann’s 5/79 (9.5 overs). Playing in the first semi-final, Molesworth 2 travelled to Cadbury Ovals to take on St Ann’s on Wednesday night. Molesworth was sent in to bat when St Ann’s won the toss. Unfortunately a wicket fell on the very first ball. Molesworth batters seemed to struggle to regain composure from this point and only two batsmen managed double-figure scores with Tim Boatwright top-scoring with 20. Playing at home and chasing a fairly low score, St Ann’s needed fewer than half the innings to gain the win and end Molesworth 6th Grade’s T20 campaign. Molesworth bowlers managed to pick off five wickets however with Larry Menzie picking up two in five balls. Batting: T. Boatwright 20 from 15, L. Menzie 12 from 27. Bowling: L. Menzie 2 for 6 from 0.5, J. Edwards 1 for 15 from 2.

One bonus vote will be awarded to a player from each local team throughout the T20 finals series.

  • New Norfolk 3rd Grade – Stewart Rice (58 from 25 batting and 1 for 9 from 4 overs bowling)
  • Molesworth – L. Menzie (2 for 6 from 5 balls bowling and 12 from 27 batting)
