Valley and Highlands Christmas calendar

THERE’S a lot happening in the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands in the lead-up to Christmas and the New Year. Here’s a calendar of Christmas events we knew of. Additional items can be emailed to damian@newnorfolknews.com 

UNTIL DECEMBER 24

* GIVING TREE: Amcal Pharmacy, New Norfolk. Accepting unwrapped gifts for children (especially for ages 8-15) to be distributed by Salvation Army.

DECEMBER 16-17

* PANTOMIME: The Derwent Valley Players present Scrooge the Panto at 2pm and 5pm on December 16 and 17. Tickets at the door at the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall, Circle St, or on Eventbrite via bit.ly/ScroogedPanto

DECEMBER 16

* PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Pancake breakfast and scones available from 9am-noon at the Ellendale Hall. $5 per serve including drink.
* PETS PARADE: Pets Christmas dress-up competition. Parade and judging at 11.30am opposite the Ellendale Hall.
* COMMUNITY CAROLS: Community carols and sausage sizzle at the Ouse Country Club, Tor Hill Rd, Ouse. 5pm start. Free tea, coffee, sausage sizzle and sweets. Visit by Santa.

DECEMBER 18-23

* SANTA’S HOUSE: Free photos with Santa Claus at the Art House, 47a High St, New Norfolk, 11am-1.15pm and 1.45-4pm.

DECEMBER 22

* LOCAL NEWS: Christmas edition of New Norfolk and Derwent Valley News published, including photos from the New Norfolk Christmas Parade and local carols events.

DECEMBER 23

* MERRY LITTLE MARKET: Christmas edition of the New Norfolk Market from 8am-2pm. Stalls, musical entertainment and a visit by Santa.
* SANTA’S LOLLY RUN (Upper Derwent Valley): Gretna Fire Brigade will help Santa Claus visit Karanja/Glenora/Bushy Park/Plenty (10.30-11.45am; Macquarie Plains/Rosegarland/Black Hills Rd (noon-12.45pm); Gretna and surrounds (1-2pm); Marked Tree Rd/Bloomfield/Norton Mandeville/Glenelg/Nareen (2.15pm); Hamilton area (3.15pm) and Ouse area (4-4.30pm). All times are approximate. Listen out for the sirens. Wait for the vehicles to stop before approaching.
* CHURCH SERVICES – ANGLICAN: St Peter’s, Hamilton, 10am; St Michael’s and All Angels Church, Bothwell, 4pm; Nine Lessons and Carols, St Matthew’s Anglican Church, New Norfolk, 7.30pm.

CHRISTMAS EVE – DECEMBER 24

* SANTA’S LOLLY RUN (New Norfolk, Lawitta and Magra): New Norfolk Fire Brigade will take Santa around the town and surrounds. Listen out for the sirens. Wait for the vehicles to stop before approaching Santa. See the Facebook page “Santa Visits New Norfolk” for more information.
* SANTA’S LOLLY RUN (Maydena to National Park): Maydena Fire Brigade will take Santa around Maydena at 5pm, and then on to Fitzgerald, Tyenna and National Park. Listen out for the sirens. Wait for the vehicles to stop before approaching Santa.
* SANTA’S LOLLY RUN (Lachlan): Lachlan Fire Brigade will take Santa on three loops around the district. Loop 1 (Mapley Rd/Lower Swamp Rd/Top Swamp Rd) from 10am. Loop 2 (Lachlan Rd/White Timber Rd/Hydehurst Rd, Mt Charles Rd) from 12.30pm. Loop 3 (Lachlan Rd/Moores Rd/Ironstone Gully Rd/Haney Rd/Blackhall Gully Rd/Mill Lane and Ringwood Rd) from 3.30pm. Listen out for the sirens. Wait for the vehicles to stop before approaching Santa.
* RADIO BROADCAST: The Reverend Celia Hooker on 98.9 Tyga FM at 10am.
* CHURCH SERVICES – SALVATION ARMY: Christmas Eve Service, Derwent Valley Corps, Hamilton Rd, New Norfolk, 10am. CATHOLIC: Family Mass, St Peter’s Church, Hillside Crescent, New Norfolk, 6pm; Midnight Mass, St Peter’s Church, New Norfolk, 9pm. ANGLICAN: Family service and Holy Communion, St Matthew’s Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 10am.

CHRISTMAS DAY – DECEMBER 25

* RADIO BROADCAST: The Reverend Celia Hooker on 98.9 Tyga FM at 9am.
* CHURCH SERVICES – ANGLICAN: Holy Communion at St Matthew’s Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 9am; St John the Baptist, Ouse, 10am. CATHOLIC: Mass at St Andrew’s Church, Bothwell, 10am; Mass at St Colman’s Church, Ellendale, 11.30am.
* FREE COMMUNITY LUNCH: Picnic-style community lunch at Arthur Square in central New Norfolk, provided by local churches. Noon-3pm. Carols afterwards. All welcome. For transport call 0429 611 528. More information on the “New Norfolk Community Christmas” Facebook page.
