THE Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) will conduct a recount around noon on February 6 to determine who will fill the vacancy on the Derwent Valley Council caused by the recent resignation of Cr Peter Binny. One of the most experienced members of the current council, Mr Binny was a previous deputy mayor and acting mayor of the municipality and returned to local government in 2022.
The TEC has written to eligible candidates from the 2022 council election to invite them to participate. Ballots from that election had already been data-processed, meaning a computer-calculated result will be known not long after the February 6 deadline for eligible candidates to indicate their willingness to take part.
Recounts for vacancies on the Huon Valley Council and Glamorgan-Spring Bay Council will be conducted at the same time. Across the state, nine recounts and two by-elections have already been held to fill council vacancies in the 15 months since the October 2022 election.
The remaining candidates from the 2022 election are James Graham, Phillip Bigg, Heather Chaplin, Wayne Shoobridge, Brody Wiggins, Natasha Woods, Deb Carnes, Liz Virtue, Brett Maryniak and Eve Nelson. One of them will be elected to complete Cr Binny’s term of office.
