Police seek witnesses to arson attack on old church

POLICE are investigating the fire that badly damaged the former Royal Derwent Hospital chapel yesterday (Monday) evening. At about 6.15pm, emergency services responded to reports of a structure fire at the former St Luke’s Church off Glebe Rd in New Norfolk.

“Tasmania Fire Service extinguished the fire and determined the fire to have been deliberately lit,” acting inspector Richard Penney from Bridgewater Police said. “Thankfully there were no occupants in the building at the time of the fire,” he said.

“Anyone with information about the fire, or who saw suspicious activity in the area around the time is asked to contact Bridgewater Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Tasmania via crimestopperstas.com.au. You can do so anonymously,” Acting Inspector Penney said.
