T20 action for local 1st and 2nd Grade teams

THIS week saw the start of the Southern Cricket Association 2nd Grade roster to complement the 1st Grade roster already under way. Playing on midweek evenings, it seems most of our Derwent Valley teams are struggling to get their best side on the oval each week. This was evident this week as all three teams went down to their opponents.

NEW NORFOLK – 1st Grade T20 format, Wednesday, January 10: New Norfolk 10/114 (19.5 overs) was defeated by MacKillop 5/115 (17.5 overs). The Redcap 1 team had their round 2 T20 game at North Warrane oval. Needing a win to keep any chance of finals alive, the Redcaps fell short when they were sent in to bat first. Tom Briscoe managed 46 from 35 balls but there was very little support from the other batsmen. The Redcaps saw their final wicket fall with one ball left of the innings with just 114 posted. MacKillop gained the win with a bit over two overs remaining and five wickets. Batting: T. Briscoe 46 from 35, J. Nichols 13 from 17. Bowling: S. Wishart 1 from 16 from 3, T.Briscoe 1 for 17 from 3.5.

MOLESWORTH – 2nd Grade T20 format, Wednesday, January 10: Molesworth 10/116 (20 overs) was defeated by St Virgil’s 4/117 (20 overs). In a game that went down to the last ball, Molesworth saw St Virgil’s take a sneaky run after the batsman failed to get bat on ball on the last ball of the innings, to take the win by one run. Batting first, Molesworth put on 116 from its full 20 overs , losing the last wicket on the last ball of the innings. Daniel Coppleman made a nice 50 runs. Batting: D. Coppleman 50 from 41, N. Ransley 21 from 26. Bowling: J. Ransley 3 for 13 from 4, J. Wilton 1 for 28 from 4.

GRETNA – 2nd Grade T20 format, Wednesday, January 10: Gretna 10/86 (17.5 overs) was defeated by St Annes 10/132 (18.5 overs). Gretna hosted St Anne’s, with the visitors batting first. They posted 132 before losing their final wicket. With the ball, Adam Browning had the batsmen guessing throughout his spell of bowling and took four good wickets in fewer than three overs. Chasing a reasonable target, the Gretna batters couldn’t find the right groove and found themselves all out for 86, giving St Anne’s the win. Batting: B. Wallis 31 from 30, R. Langford 11 from 13. Bowling: A. Browning 4 for 19 from 2.5, C. Ransley 2 for 16 from 4.
