Highlands mayor nominates for state election

THE Central Highlands Council’s mayor is a late addition to the list of candidates for this month’s state election. Cr Loueen Triffitt today told New Norfolk and Derwent Valley News that she had nominated as an independent candidate for the seat of Lyons.

A councillor for nearly 20 years and mayor for the past eight years, Cr Triffitt said she loved being mayor but felt she had more to give. She issued the following statement:

“I take this moment to inform you all that I have decided to run as an independent in the Lyons electorate at the current House of Assembly elections. The polling day is the 23rd of March, 2024. It was a difficult decision as I truly love being the mayor across our beautiful Central Highlands. I believe I have so much more to give and to get done.

“By law, I continue to be your mayor during the campaigning. I remain 100% committed to my role as your mayor and will not be using my mayoral position to campaign as your potential Lyons independent representative. You will see some minimal campaigning, for instance, the advertisement in this month’s Highland Digest and New Norfolk New, as I wanted to remain honest and transparent as always.

“Please continue to contact me as your mayor, or likewise, if you would like to contact me about my campaign. You will notice some different contact details in the advertisement and throughout the campaign. This is to ensure I keep my mayoral position and my campaign separate. My commitment as mayor will continue to be my priority.”
