Ron Sanderson and Michelle Dracoulis

New GM: No surprises, it’s Sanderson

AHEAD of an anticipated formal announcement tomorrow, Derwent Valley Council mayor Michelle Dracoulis took to social media earlier tonight to announce that acting general manager Ron Sanderson has been appointed as the council’s new chief executive.

The Facebook post at about 6pm confirmed the information that been circulating locally in the days since a special closed council meeting on Tuesday to choose between the sort-listed candidates for the top job.

Canadian-born Mr Sanderson moved to Tasmania in 1986 and joined the Circular Head Council in 1987 as its first engineer. He moved to Brighton Council in 1993 as engineering manager and also had 15 years as general manager.

During that time he had stints as acting general manager at the Glamorgan-Spring Bay and Tasman councils and served as administrator of the Kentish Council for 18 months.

Mr Sanderson joined the Derwent Valley Council in July 2022 as its executive manager for infrastructure. He recently confirmed to the News that he had “put up his hand” to continue the work he has been doing for the past 10 months as acting general manager.

The Derwent Valley Council’s top job became vacant last March when it was announced that the council and former general manager Dean Griggs were parting ways. The council appointed Mr Sanderson as the acting general manager and the recruitment process for the permanent position was delayed by the local government reform process which was initially expected to result in council mergers.

With forced amalgamations now off the table, the council proceeded to seek candidates for the position. A shortlist of potential general managers was discussed in a closed council meeting on January 18 but no decision was reached. The short-listed candidates were re-interviewed the following week and the matter returned to another closed council meeting on January 30, after which Cr Dracoulis said a general manager had been appointed but no further announcement would be made until contracts had been signed. That announcement had been expected tomorrow (Friday).
