$100m Lyell Highway upgrade on Liberals’ radar

A RE-ELECTED Liberal state government would seek federal support for a $100 million upgrade of the Lyell Highway between New Norfolk and Granton. The party’s “2030 Strong Plan for Roads in Southern Tasmania” released today includes a $20m allocation to the project.

Expanding on this announcement for New Norfolk and Derwent Valley News, Lyons Liberal MHA Guy Barnett said the commitment was to provide $20m towards the duplication of the Lyell Highway to two lanes in each direction between Granton and New Norfolk.

“We’re serious about improving access to the New Norfolk and the Derwent Valley with its wonderful local markets, new and engaging sporting facilities, world class eateries, distilleries and breweries,” Mr Barnett said. “This upgrade, which is part our Strong Plan, will significantly improve travels times and safety along this narrow stretch of road.

“While there are significant construction challenges associated with this project – such as proximity to the Derwent River and some steep topography in some locations – as well as side road accesses to the highway, this project would not only be a major boost for the 6000 residents of New Norfolk, but for the entire Derwent Valley,” Mr Barnett said.

He said the total estimated cost of the project was $100 million. “We will be seeking the Australian Government provide the remaining funding under the usual 80:20 Federal-State funding arrangements for roads of this nature.”

  1. Mr Barnett should well know that the 80/20 split arrangement was a policy of the former Coalition Federal Government. The current Labor Federal Government’s policy is a 50/50 split.

So this policy announcement is already doomed to failure.
