Derwent Valley and Highlands cricket results – Week 20 (finals)

WITH a week of preliminary finals in the Southern Cricket Association it was great to see all local teams emerge victorious from their encounters. This takes the total number of our Derwent Valley/Central Highlands teams in SCA grand finals to four. Lets see how each match played out.

NEW NORFOLK – 3rd Grade 50-over format: New Norfolk will have closely watched the match between Bothwell and Claremont to discover who they will meet in the grand final on March 16. The grand final will be played at Tynwald starting at 11am and the New Norfolk Cricket Club would no doubt love to see plenty of people there to watch the game with the canteen and bar open.

GRETNA – 3rd Grade 50-over format – PRELIMINARY FINAL: Gretna 10/215 (49 overs) defeated Sandford 10/177 (44.2 overs). Gretna 1 had a second chance to make next weekend’s grand final when it hosted Sandford at Gretna on Saturday for the preliminary final. Hoping to return to the form that saw them finish so high on the table, Gretna batting first started to show some good signs with two batters getting to raise the bat at the 50 milestone score. Zach Crosswell top-scored with 53 with opener Mathew Burns returning to early season form and getting to 50. With Gretna’s talent 215 wasn’t a bad score to post but I’m sure they will be looking to capitalise on their skills to raise that score next weekend. In the second innings, Gretna bowlers led by Corey Ransley (three wickets) took all of Sandford’s wickets with Sandford on 177. Gretna used seven bowlers with Ransley taking three wickets and the other six bowlers took a wicket each. Burns also effected a run out. Gretna now progresses to the 2nd Grade grand final against Sorell at Sorell starting at 11am. It would be great to see a big turnout of supporters to help bring the premiership cup back to Gretna. Batting: Z. Crosswell 53 from 68, M. Burns 50 from 56. Bowling: C. Ransley 3 for 30 from 10, A. Browning 1 for 5 from 5.

BOTHWELL – 3rd Grade 50-over format – PRELIMINARY FINAL: Bothwell 5/183 (40.4 Overs) defeated Claremont 10/182 (44.3 overs). Bothwell 1 progressed to the preliminary final after their win last weekend and faced off against Claremont for the right to play New Norfolk in next week’s grand final. The Bucks were hoping their recent run of excellent form could be maintained for two more games to see out the season on a high. The form was definitely retained for this week, with the Bucks taking a good win over Claremont at Claremont’s home ground. Bowling first, the Bucks had Claremont all out for 182 in close to 45 overs, which shows they had also limited their run scoring opportunities. Spin king Matty Eyles took four wickets and Nathan Eyles 3. In the chase the Bucks looked in control all innings with an opening partnership of 66 between Jamie Devine (20) and Brock Nichols with Nichols going on to top score with a patient 76 runs from 104 balls. The Bucks got the win in the 41st over, showing they still had plenty of runs left in the shed and now look to move onto next weekend’s grand final at Tynwald Oval against New Norfolk. With canteen and bar facilities available it’s sure to be a big day of cricket between two close opponents. Batting: B. Nichols 76 from 104, B. Eyles 42 from 51. Bowling: M. Eyles 4 for 28 from 9.3, N. Eyles 3 for 31 from 6.

BOTHWELL – 7rd Grade 40-over format: Bothwell 7th Grade had this weekend off and would have been watching the game between MacKillop and the Knights to see who would be travelling to Bothwell on March 16 play the Bucks in the grand final. Bothwell Cricket Club invites all supporters to come along to watch the grand final action, with canteen and bar facilities available at the Hollow Tree Rd venue.
