Eagle Women down Sharks; Reserves show promise

By VANESSA STEVENSON & TASH FARROW
| ON Saturday, the Lady Eagles were at home on the big Boyer Oval for their first home game of the season, lining against Dodges Ferry. Hayley James was welcomed back for her first game for 2024.

The Eagles midfield was on top early in the first quarter, with Zoie Crawford, Tarn Ford and Sophie Farrow playing well. Chloe Ford appeared to have the ball on a string, while Dannielle Clifford and Nicole Moss were rucking well. The ball was in the Eagles’ forward line consistently, for no reward. An early Shark attack was thwarted by a great mark by Maddi Krause which saw the ball go back into the Eagles’ forward line with some good work by Sharn Grimsey to Jemma Hay resulting in a behind. Sid Skelly had two shots for goals which both resulted in behinds. A nice mark by Dannielle Clifford resulted in the Eagles’ first goal. Tarn Ford and Zoie Crawford also kicked a goal each for the quarter.

The second quarter opened with the Sharks scoring the first goal. The Eagles’ defence was playing well with a pass from Mel Green to a running Jemma Hay resulting in her first goal. Nicole Moss was rucking well and Sophie Farrow picked up many touches in this quarter. A great mark in the forward line by Liv Hariss resulted in a minor score. Zoie Crawford and Tarn Ford were marking well as Jemma Hay kicked her second goal the quarter. Tarn Ford received two 50m penalties, with Chloe Ford topping it off with a goal. The Eagles’ defence was holding up well.

The third quarter opened with scrappy play from both teams. After consecutive free kicks to Dodges Ferry, some good work by Gemma Hay to Tarn Ford resulted in a goal for the Eagles. A great mark by Nicole Moss saw the ball go back into the Eagles’ forward line for a minor score. Monty Pearcey received a free from a beautiful tackle. The resulting kick rolled through for a behind. Zoie Crawford passed to Nicole Moss for another behind. Jorja Franklin, Montana Percey, Sharn Grimsey and Sophie Farrow were tackling well and Chloe Ford finished the quarter with a goal.

The Eagles’ smaller, faster players stepped up in the final quarter with some great work. Dannielle Clifford received a free kick, who passed to Chloe Ford who passed to Tarn Ford for another goal for New Norfolk. Jorja Franklin was tackling well and received a free kick, which she sent forward to Mel Green who took a great mark. Her kick was marked by Dannielle Clifford who kicked her second goal for the match. Ash Green chimed in with some great football which resulted in Zoie Crawford going on to score a behind. A great mark in defence by Hayley Roberts saw the ball go back into the Eagles’ forward line. A strong Mel Green mark and kick forward saw some great play by Olivia Hariss for another home-team goal as New Norfolk ran out 62-point winners. RESERVES REPORT

By WAYNE WALKER
THE Eagle Reserves side was defeated by last year’s premiers, the Dodges Ferry Sharks, by 43 points on Saturday. If you are an Eagle fan you could not help but feel a degree of confidence in the season ahead due to some good early signs by a relatively new look squad. This is in direct contrast to last season as the club struggled for numbers each week barely scraping a side together to compete week to week. Coaching staff Corey Ransley and Nigel Hay look to have a stable group of players to work with on a consistent basis which should hold them in good stead in future weeks ahead.

The Sharks jumped out of the blocks early to grab a 27-point lead at quarter-time, scoring 4.4 (28) to the Eagles’ 0.1 (1). The home side bounced back in the second term due to some great work from on-baller Josh Eyles, club stalwart and captain Corey Ransley and newcomers Jye and Zane Lester. Goals to Ransley, Josh Eyles and Jude Holbrook enabled the Eagles to get back into the contest as the half-time scores showed the Sharks holding a 17-point margin: Dodges Ferry 5.6 (36) to New Norfolk 3.1 (19).

The Sharks went on to kick four goals in the second half while the Eagles could only manage four behinds to go on with a comfortable win. However, in comparison, last year saw most opposition sides were running away with big winning margins.

Centreman Josh Eyles starred for four quarters, following on from his Round 1 performance against Cygnet. Brothers Jye and Zane Lester performed well in their first hit out for the club. Luke Crosswell across half-back along with Connor Kelly-Lennox, and Cody Eyles was busy all day. Keep an eye out for new faces within the group such as Tobias Bradford, Adam Moloney, Timothy Warden, Blake Rogers, Liam Lowe, Jye and Zane Lester. Let’s see where this group along with players from last year’s team takes the club in season 2024.
