First win in two years for senior Eagles side

WHILE the Eagles’ women’s team has gone from strength to strength over the last two years and the reserves have won the occasional match, the senior side went 742 days without a win – until yesterday (Saturday). The team scored a landslide victory over the rebuilding Hobart Tigers, 170 points to 39.

The senior Eagles’ last win was on Good Friday two years ago, when they defeated Hobart at its home ground at the Tasmanian Cricket Association venue. The Tigers were victorious when the two sides met at Boyer Oval later that year but went into recess at the end of that season.

Kicking off at Boyer Oval at 2pm, yesterday’s game was played in sunny conditions with the breeze favouring the changerooms end of the ground. The Tigers scored the first goal, with Tyron Bailey responding for the Eagles two minutes later. Both teams scored another goal before the end of the first quarter and it was the Eagles five points in front due to the number of minor scores posted.

The Eagles kept a lid on the Tigers’ scoring opportunities for much of the rest of the game, posting 10 goals to none in the second term, five to one in the third quarter and seven to three in the final stanza.

The final scores were New Norfolk 24.26 (170) to Hobart 6.3 (39) and “there’s a team on the track” was soon being sung by the senior team for the first time in 742 days.

Jordan Eiszele was named New Norfolk’s best player. Also on the best players list were Baxter Lewis, Josh Farrow, Jye Bearman, Josh Clifford and Bailey Wheeler. Josh Farrow, Tyron Bailey and Jye Bearman tied for leading goal-scorer with five each. Jacob Daley, Josh Clifford and Mitchell Hay kicked two apiece and single goals were scored by Jordan Eiszele, Jake Harris and Ben Lovell.

This weekend the Eagles play Lindisfarne at Anzac Park.
