Letter: Councillor responds to mayor’s allegations

REGARDING the headlines “Mayor decries highland council ‘collusion and corruption’,” and “Mayor calls in minister as council dispute escalates” (News, April 6 and 17), and unsubstantiated claims of abuse of power, collusion, corruption, please let me assure readers of New Norfolk and Derwent Valley News and those beyond, those accusations are without evidence.

I served as a decorated US Army officer and Army helicopter pilot, and then went on to become an international airline captain flying Boeing 747-400 jumbo jets with a crew of 18. I held the highest-available pilot licence, which is the Airline Transport Pilot Licence, from seven countries including Australia. I was required to be a “fit and proper person” and hold current national police checks, serving as an airline captain.

A person certainly does not achieve those milestones and lofty titles in their life, by abusing one’s power, colluding, or being corrupt. Having integrity, being honourable, treating people as I would want to be treated, and complying with rules and regulations would be essential to achieving the goals I set for myself, then, as now.

Councillor ROBERT CASSIDY
BOTHWELL
