Final print edition of the Derwent Valley Gazette

TODAY’S issue of the Derwent Valley Gazette is the last to be printed, its owner has announced. From next week the 71-year-old title will only be available online. Citing factors including increased production costs, an ongoing move towards online news and the impact of the imminent closure of a northern print centre, Font Publishing managing partner Brad Stansfield said today’s would be the last printed weekly edition of the Gazette.

Font initially leased the Gazette from its previous owner, News Corp Australia, from the start of 2019 and purchased the title the following year when News Corp offloaded titles including Tasmanian Country, which was also sold to Font. Font has also bought established newspapers at Sorell, Longford and King Island, often sharing content from those papers in the Gazette.

Font advertising and design manager James Young said the Gazette’s new online format would provide advertisers with alternative options including “digital display and sponsored stories” available from next week. Mr Stansfield said there would also be a Derwent Valley Gazette page in Tasmanian Country newspaper once a month.

First published in 1953, the Derwent Valley Gazette was locally owned until 1981 when it was sold to Davies Brothers, proprietors of the Mercury and other publications. In 1986 it was absorbed into News Limited (now News Corp Australia) along with the Mercury and its other stablemates. Font PR began publishing the Gazette in 2019, restoring the title to Derwent Valley Gazette after 20 years as The Gazette. Font PR later transferred its newspaper group to Font Publications.

New Norfolk and Derwent Valley News will continue its fortnightly print publication schedule and its website will continue the online service started 16 years ago.
