Women back on winning track; Reserves outpointed

| Following a tough, physical game against Claremont the previous week, the Lady Eagles were on the road to try to get back on the winners list against Huonville on Saturday. SEE THE PHOTO GALLERY

The game started in fine but cool conditions with both sides trying to gain the upper hand. In an even quarter, the more accurate Eagles scored two goals to Huonville’s two behinds to hold a narrow 10-point lead at the first change: New Norfolk 2.0 (12) to Huonville 0.2 (2).

The Eagles ramped up the pressure in the second term with their midfield working hard and continually pushing the ball into the forward line. Some highlights for the quarter included Sophie Farrow taking a great mark and passing to Zoie Crawford and Tarn Ford taking a great mark for a goal. Mel Green also chipped in with two goals in two minutes to push the lead out to 37 points. The Eagles’ backline was working well and held Huonville scoreless for the quarter. Half-time scores: New Norfolk 6.3 (39) to Huonville 0.2 (2).

Following the main break, the Eagles continued the pressure, with Maddison Krause working hard on the backline. Sidonie Skelly and Farrow were tackling well with Zoie Crawford and Tarn Ford keeping the ball in the forward 50. Goals to Sidonie Skelly, Farrow and Tarn Ford kept the pressure on the Huonville backline. Dannielle Clifford, Crawford and Olivia Harriss were combining well. The Lions scored their first goal in this quarter. Three-quarter time scores: New Norfolk 10.4 (64) to Huonville 1.3 (9).

The final quarter saw the Eagles continue the pressure with Sophie McNeill winning in the ruck with ease. Tarn Ford kicked the first goal of the quarter. Crawford and McNeill were busy across the forward fifty. Sidonie Skelly was tackling well and keeping pressure on the Huonville players. Gracie Kube and Jaymee Mansfield were solid in defence for the Eagles as they kept Huonville goalless in this quarter. Farrow and Harriss were also prominent again in this quarter.

Over all, it was a good solid performance from the Eagles as they prepare for a tough game against the second-placed Hutchins at Boyer Oval on June 15. It was great to see captain Sophie Farrow notch up her 50th club game on Saturday. Congratulations Sophie on your career so far, we look forward to many more games. Congratulations also to Jemma Hay who was voted New Norfolk’s best-on-ground by the home team and received a medal.

| The Eagles Reservess found the going tough against a talented Huonville Lions outfit that boasted a few senior players in the mix as they went down by 58 points in the early game on Saturday. SEE THE PHOTO GALLERY

Following an even first term with the Eagles trailing by 10 points at quarter-time, the Lions booted six goals in the second quarter to jump out to a 46-point lead at the main break. The contest became a stalemate in the second half with the Lions kicking only three goals while the Eagles managed one.

The Eagles went into the game a little undermanned with a number of players unavailable, which made a big difference to the overall performance. A few Oatlands players helped out the squad so a big thank you to Stephen Hall, Shaun Atkinson, Shane Curtis and Michael Cook for getting in and having a go for the Eagles. Youngster Jacob Foster also stepped up for his first game.

The Eagles were well served by Luke Crosswell and Matthew Jones who both battled hard on the backline. Corey Ransley continues to show his leadership in the ruck and fought out every contest. Andrew Minchin had plenty of grabs and Nick Ransley and Wayne Cook performed well throughout the contest.
