New taxi owners aiming to be streets ahead

A LIFELONG dream owning his own taxi company has become a reality for Brendan Dunning. Mr Dunning and his wife Tracey Johnson have been running New Norfolk Taxis since February and are on a program of constant improvement for the business and they are keen to recruit additional drivers to help expand the service.

A key ambition is to return to offering full coverage to all Derwent Valley towns but drivers are the key to making that a reality and they are providing hard to recruit. They would also like to add a wheelchair accessible taxi to the fleet if funding support can be found.

“The New Norfolk Taxis zone includes all of the Derwent Valley including Molesworth and the team is committed to supplying a service to all those areas,” Brendan said. “As more drivers join the team it’s New Norfolk Taxis’ goal to provide a better service to the outer areas.”

Brendan has been in the taxi industry for 29 years and follows in the footsteps of his father, who drove cabs in the Northern Suburbs. He and Tracey expressed their appreciation to the former owner of New Norfolk Taxis, Phil Burdon for making their dream a reality, and to long serving manager Richard Cousens for his support.

They also thanked another former owner of the business, Mary Maddox, for her support. Mrs Maddox and her late husband Danny ran the service from 1994-2007.

New Norfolk Taxis are available seven days a week and the number to call has not changed – 6261 2323 – but they are now answered by the Tasmanian-owned Southern Communications Network call centre at Moonah. Cabs can also be booked by using the SmartHail mobile phone app.

For information about becoming a taxi driver, call 6261 2323 and leave a message for Mr Dunning.
