Local teams strike out in T20 deciders

T20 Week 7 – Grand Finals
February 22-23

This week was grand final time in the T20 roster and three local teams were playing. Unfortunately, we saw a trifecta of losses with all three teams going down to their opponents in the big games. On a positive note, a massive milestone was celebrated at Tynwald park on Tuesday night for one of the Redcaps players.

TIER 1:
Bothwell 10/101 (17.3 overs) lost to Montagu Bay 7/136 (20 overs)

The Tier 1 Bucks played their T20 grand final at Montagu Bay Oval on Monday night. The Bucks were bowling in the first innings, with Bailey Mayne taking three wickets and Caleb Mayne taking two. The Bucks snagged seven wickets all up, with the Sharks batting through their full 20 overs and placing 136 on the board. With the bat and chasing grand final glory, the Bucks were unable to get any forward momentum. Kane Lovell top-scored for the Bucks with 19 runs. The Bucks were all out in the 18th over, falling short of taking the win. Batting: K. Lovell 19 from 15 (3 x 4s), B. Nichols 14 from 21 (1 x 6, 1 x 4). Bowling: Bailey Mayne 3 for 33 from 4, C. Mayne 2 for 26 from 4.

TIER 2:
New Norfolk 10/105 (18.3 overs) lost to Derwent 7/154 (20 overs)

The Tier 2 Redcaps hosted Derwent at Tynwald Park on Tuesday night for the grand final. Bowling first, Jamie Maddox once again took multiple wickets for the Redcaps, finishing with three. Jack Bowerman – better known as a batsman – picked up two wickets as well. Derwent put on a good score of 154 from their 20 overs. With the bat, the Redcaps lost early wickets with no
real partnerships or scores being made. Jordan Banks-Smith came in in the mid-order and top-scored with 33 but it was a little too late for the Redcaps to chase down the win. This was a massive milestone game for one of the Redcap players, with research by Wade Gleeson revealing that Stewart Rice was playing his 650th match. Rice’s accomplishments in cricket are massive, with some of these listed on the Redcaps’ Facebook page. In a fitting tribute both teams lined up to give Rice a guard of honour as he took to the field for his milestone game. Well done Stewart and I’m sure there are quite a few more games in store with some of your form this year showing how valuable you are to the club. Batting: J. Banks-Smith 33 from 29 (1 x 6, 1 x 4), B. Kemmler 15 from 16 (1 x 6, 1 x 4). Bowling: J. Maddox 3 for 34 from 4, J. Bowerman 2 for 25 from 4.

TIER 3
New Norfolk 9/91 (20 overs) lost to Sorell 6/92 (13.4 overs)

The Tier 3 New Norfolk side hosted Sorell on Wednesday night for their grand final game. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Redcaps found scoring hard with Sorell not giving up too many boundaries from their full 20 overs. The slow run rate left the Redcaps scoring just 91 from their 20 overs with the loss of nine wickets. Troy Smith top-scored with 17. It was Smith in the second innings who tried to fire-up the Redcaps, taking three wickets for just 10 runs in 2.4 overs. With a small target, Sorell made the run chase look easy and cruised to victory in less than 14 overs. Batting: T. Smith 17 from 24, A. Drew 16 from 17 (2 x 4’s). Bowling: T. Smith 3 for 10 from 2.4, J. Evans 2 for 7 from 2.
