THE New Norfolk Panthers’ women’s team kicked off their first game of the season last weekend with a solid showing against a well‑drilled Taroona side. From the opening whistle, the Panthers settled quickly, holding their own with confident passing, smart ball movement and plenty of communication across the park.

The midfield worked hard to control the tempo, playing back when needed and creating space to build through the lines. Strong attacking runs kept Taroona guessing, while relentless pressure forced their back line to stay switched on throughout the first half. The Panthers created several promising moments going forward, showing glimpses of the attacking combinations that will only strengthen as the season progresses.
Despite Taroona finding the back of the net twice, the Panthers’ defensive line held strong, absorbing pressure and clearing danger with determination. Centre‑backs stayed composed under pressure, and the wide defenders worked tirelessly to shut down channels and support the midfield. The first half saw the Panthers make a real impact, challenging Taroona for every ball and making them work hard to maintain possession.
As the heat set in and legs began to tire, the second half became a test of fitness and resilience. The Panther women dug deep, pushing through with grit, water breaks, and plenty of ice to stay cool. Even as fatigue crept in, the effort never dropped – a testament to the team’s spirit and commitment. The Panthers continued to press when opportunities arose, showing they were far from out of the contest.
There were also plenty of positives to take forward: improved structure, clearer communication, and a growing confidence in playing out from the back. New combinations began to click, and the team showed they’re willing to work for each other in every moment, whether chasing down a loose ball, covering a teammate, or pushing forward on the counter.
Overall, it was a promising start to the season. The Panthers showed structure, teamwork, and heart – all the ingredients for a strong year ahead. With continued effort and belief, this group has every reason to feel excited about what’s to come.
