Realistic scenes at fire brigade training night

THE combination of rain, mist, a smoke machine and an orange light added to the sense of realism at the New Norfolk Fire Brigade’s training scenario at Tynwald Park on Tuesday night. “If it’s raining, we’re still training,” one of the firefighters said.

The volunteer crews were able to practice door entry, breathing apparatus operations and search and rescue techniques in a smoke-filled environment with no visibility.

They were also able to test their pump operations, drawing water from the nearby Lachlan River, as well as practicing hose work, first aid, radio communications and well as incident control mentoring. The fire brigade expressed its thanks to the New Norfolk Cricket Club for allowing their change rooms to be used during this training exercise.

Additional volunteers are needed by all Derwent Valley and Central Highlands fire brigades and potential candidates are welcome to drop in to a training night at their local brigade, phone 1800 000 699, email volunteers@fire.tas.gov.au, or visit fire.tas.gov.au/volunteer/
