All abuzz about the honey bee festival

THE third Derwent Valley Honey Bee Festival will be held this Sunday, April 19, in association with the Tasmanian Autumn Festival. The annual celebration of pollinators, community and the sweet bounty of the region is organised by the Derwent Valley Beekeepers Association, which is buzzing with anticipation.

The family-friendly event will be held on the New Norfolk Esplanade from 10am to 2pm. Entry is free. The offerings will include hands-on beekeeping demonstrations, children’s activities, local honey tastings and talks on bee health and environmental stewardship.

There will be a “Festival Marketplace” with a range of stalls featuring local honey and hive products; beeswax candles, skincare and gifts; fresh food, baked goods and drinks; plants, garden and sustainable living products; and arts, crafts and handmade goods.

The festival will also host the Tasmanian Honey Competition, deciding on the best leatherwood, prickly box and wildflower honey. Whether you’re a seasoned apiarist or just curious about the vital role bees play in the ecosystem, the festival is a chance to connect with nature while learning about and supporting local beekeepers.
