A FUNERAL service will be held at the Graham Family Funeral Home on Monday, June 15, to celebrate the life of Irene Barnes who has died in her 89th year. Irene lived at Lachlan and New Norfolk for many years with her late husband Vic and the couple were key community contributors in many fields.
Irene was born in Germany in 1937 and came to Australia with her brother after World War II. She later formed a blended family with Vic and in their retirement the couple moved to the Derwent Valley.
In 2024 she was named the Derwent Valley Council’s Australia Day Senior Citizen of the Year in recognition of her community activities including more than 15 years with the Corumbene Auxiliary. She was a past member of the Lachlan Community Hall Association and a foundation member of the Derwent Valley Autumn Festival Committee.
Irene was widowed last year when Vic died at the age of 99. Her funeral service will be held at The Graham Family Funeral Home, corner of Risdon and Bay roads, New Town, at 3pm on June 15. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart Foundation and will be gratefully accepted at the service. The funeral will not be live-streamed.
Farewell Irene and condolences to the family and friends.
