PREMIER Jeremy Rockliff has accepted the resignation of Lyons MP Jane Howlett from her ministerial responsibilities. “Minister Howlett has made the decision to step aside to ensure the Government remains focused on the job Tasmanians elected us to do,” Mr Rockliff said.
The resignation is the government’s second loss of a minister in the wake of opposition parties and independent politicians questioning the expenditure of public monies on politicians’ legal fees.
In a statement, Ms Howlett said she had tendered her resignation as a minister to the premier this morning. “It is obvious that the relentless personal and political attack on me is causing a significant distraction for the Government, which I cannot allow to continue,” Ms Howlett said.
“It has been an honour to serve the people of Tasmania across multiple portfolios. I have done so with a total focus on public duty.
“Tasmanians should be rightly concerned the Opposition is continuing to destabilise minority government to put their own political interests ahead of the proper work of delivering for our state.
“I want to thank my family, my staff, friends, and all those who have supported me. I intend to continue to serve the people of Lyons with dedication, hard work, and determination.”
Mr Rockliff said Ms Howlett would continue to represent the people of Lyons and support delivery across the state in a range of area and the government would continue to deliver stability and certainty for the Tasmanian community.
“At a time when Tasmanians expect steady leadership, this Government remains focused on providing stability, continuity, and results. What Tasmanians will not see from this Government is a loss of focus. We are continuing to get on with strengthening the economy, supporting jobs, and delivering essential services.”
Mr Rockliff criticised what he described as an increasingly negative political environment. “In recent weeks we have seen a pattern of relentless political attacks that have added to distraction and taken attention away from the work that matters to Tasmanians,” he said.
“While others are focused on political games, this government is focused on governing. Arrangements will be put in place to ensure continuity across ministerial portfolios. There will be no disruption to the work of government. Our agenda remains unchanged, and our commitment to Tasmanians remains absolute,” he said.
