Opinion: Community ‘good sports’ for the kids

By JEN BUTLER MHA |
IN today’s increasingly digital world, the importance of sport in a child’s life has never been greater. Participation in sport not only promotes physical health, it also builds confidence, resilience, teamwork and a sense of community. For many young people, the opportunity to compete both locally and interstate is a dream worth pursuing, but one that often comes with significant financial challenges, something made even harder by the current cost of living environment.

With this in mind, we held a Cent Night Community Fundraising Event at Granton Hall in March, with the goal of supporting local children in achieving their sporting ambitions. The response from the community was nothing short of incredible with 70 people attending. For those unfamiliar, a Cent Night is a fun and engaging fundraising event where participants purchase numbered tickets for just 10 cents each. Guests can choose which prizes they’d like to try their luck on, placing as many numbers as they wish into each draw. When their number is called, they simply head to the prize table to collect their winnings. Alongside this, the evening also featured a silent auction, showcasing a range of fantastic items generously donated by businesses both large and small.

The event was inspired by the growing number of requests our office receives from children across the Lyons electorate who have been selected to represent Tasmania in their chosen sports. While these opportunities are incredibly exciting and well-deserved, they often come with considerable costs for families. We wanted to create a way to build a dedicated pool of funds that would allow us to provide greater financial support to these young athletes than we have previously been able to offer. Thanks to the generosity of our community, the evening raised nearly $4000, which will go directly towards supporting local children in pursuing their sporting dreams. The night was a wonderful success, not only in terms of funds raised but also in bringing the community together for a shared purpose. It was heartening to see so many people come out to support local children and their dreams.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the businesses both large and small who so generously donated prizes and auction items. Your support played a vital role in making the event such a success. We are also incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, contributed and helped create such a positive and enjoyable atmosphere. Together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of local children, helping them pursue their sporting goals and represent our community with pride.
