Vale Jack Spinks, Maydena community worker

THE life of Maydena community identity Jack Spinks will be celebrated at a service at the Graham Family Funeral Home, New Town, at 12.30pm tomorrow (Thursday, June 4). Family and friends are invited to attend.

Jack passed away last Wednesday, May 27, and in lieu of flowers his family requests that contributions be made to MND Australia at the service.

Gwen and Jack received a New Norfolk and Derwent Valley News community achiever award in 2023.

Tribute was paid to Jack and his wife Gwen several months ago when they retired from active community service to adapt to life with the degenerative illness. The couple had played leading roles in the Tyenna Valley community since making their home at Maydena more than 30 years ago.

They volunteered together and individually on a range of initiatives. Until recently, Jack was second officer with the Maydena Fire Brigade and had been the co-ordinator of the local volunteer ambulance group prior to its disbanding in 2018 and he was a key figure in the Maydena Community Association.

Friends from affiliated community services including the Gretna and Westerway fire brigades and the Westerway and Upper Derwent Valley Bush Watch Group recently gathered at Maydena to thank Gwen and Jack for their contribution to the local and wider community. The couple were also in the thoughts of many at last week’s Bush Watch meeting at Gretna.

The funeral service will start at 12.30pm tomorrow (Thursday, June 4) at Graham Family Funeral Home, corner of Risdon and Bay Rds, New Town. The interment will take place at Malbina Lawn Cemetery, 100 Molesworth Rd, Malbina at about 2pm.
