Highland Lakes Rd speed reduction approved

A SPEED limit reduction on part of the Highland Lakes Rd has been approved by the Commissioner for Transport. The current 100 km/h speed limit on a 4.4km section of Highland Lakes Rd near Little Den Hill, between Apsley andr Bothwell, will be changed to 80 km/h next week.

“The speed limit was reviewed following community requests and an assessment by Building Tasmania’s Transport Group,” said a spokesperson for Building Tasmania, the state government agency that has replaced the former Department of State Growth.

“Building Tasmania’s assessment supported the need for a safer speed limit due to the narrow and winding nature of the road, which includes several large curves that limit visibility. The crash history also supported the decision, with 12 reported crashes in the past five years (May 2021 to May 2026), including two resulting in serious injuries, three resulting in minor injuries, and one requiring first aid.

“The new speed limit will help lower the risk and severity of crashes and will provide road users with more time to respond to the road’s alignment and changing conditions. The changed speed limits will come into effect once the new speed limit signs have been installed, which is expected to be during the week starting Monday, July 27, 2026.

“New speed limit ahead’ signs will also be placed to warn road users of the changes. Road users are reminded to follow the posted speed limits and always drive to the conditions.”
