Police disappointed by vehicle compliance checks at New Norfolk

ABOUT one in 10 vehicles inspected during a traffic operation at New Norfolk yesterday (Thursday) evening had failed to meet basic roadworthiness standards, Tasmania Police said today. Officers from the Southern Road Policing division conducted a high visibility traffic operation on the Hobart Rd section of the Lyell Highway near Millbrook Rise at New Norfolk yesterday, inspecting about 100 vehicles as part of ongoing road safety activities.

“No drink or drug drivers were detected during the operation however, a concerning number of motorists were found to be non-compliant with road safety and licensing requirements,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said. During the operation:

  • 10 defect notices were issued for vehicles that failed to meet basic roadworthy standards
  • Six infringement notices were issued, with four involving provisional (P-plate) drivers
  • One driver was detected operating a vehicle while both their vehicle registration and driver’s licence were suspended
  • One person was arrested on an outstanding warrant

“Overall, that is a very high level of non-compliance from such a small sample of motorists. At this time of year the roads are often slippery and the daylight hours are short. All motorists need to take a moment to ensure their tyres are safe and all lights are operating correctly,” police said.

“Tasmania Police will continue conducting high visibility traffic operations across the state to improve road safety and encourage compliance with road rules and vehicle standards.”
